We never get to write the last line in history.
This is particularly true when it comes to researching and uncovering the contributions of the Black Community in Rensselaer County in the 19th and 20th centuries.
From the abolitionist movement to securing civil rights, contributions of black Americans who lived and worked in Rensselaer County made an impact both locally and nationally.
Since developing the curriculum packet for students in 2005, Rensselaer County Historical Society was thrilled in 2018 to acquire a rare portrait of Peter Baltimore, a native Trojan who was instrumental in the abolitionist movement and was the father of Garnet Douglass Baltimore, the first black engineer and graduate of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
We have also uncovered information about leading black women and their contributions to education and art in the county. Your gift today will support a major overhaul of our key educational programs to reflect the contributions of all to our community's history. Our curriculum needs to reflect these discoveries so students in our county and beyond realize the important contributions made by these citizens.
Your gift to RCHS on this Giving Tuesday WILL impact students who come to RCHS for award winning programs to study and value our urban environment. All youth who participate in RCHS education programs develop a better sense of place and stewardship of their communities. We open their eyes to history, inspiring enthusiasm for their roots.
