Music Box
The Music Box
Burl veneered case. Probably German
Flywheel marked “Jacot’s Safety Check, Pat’d Sept. 22, 1885”
This elaborate music box, c. 1885, would be perfectly at home in a Victorian parlor and is a part of the permanent collection at the Hart Cluett Museum currently on display in the Toy room of the Hart-Cluett House.
It has removable cylinders that play several songs each. Notice that the cylinder has tiny pins that stick up and hit the “keys” to produce a tune. There is also a special drum and bell section at the back that has its own switch and can be played to accompany the music.
While the music box is in playable condition, it isn’t played during the Greens Show to help preserve it for future generations to enjoy.
Take a listen!
