Urban Renewal and the Beginnings of Historic Preservation
Like many cities in the northeast in the 1960’s, Troy saw a decline in businesses due to the growth of suburbs and and their subsequent malls. In an effort to compete, Troy undertook an ambitious plan to remove multiple blocks of 19th century buildings and create a center mall. This tour explores the blocks affected by this phased project and the subsequent outcry by preservationists against removing these historic blocks of 19th and early 20th century architecture.
Walking Tours meet in front of the Arts Center at 265 River Street.
